Branding and SEO with Google's Guidelines

The first thing I do when beginning an SEO campaign is check the brand name in Google search in quotations like: "your brand name." This is to get an idea and see if there's an issue with branding. Are there other companies that show up? What results show up? And most of all, why are they ranking for the brand name? There's usually tons of low-hanging fruit revealed just by analyzing the Google SERPs for the brand and could provide some quick wins.

What does branding have to do with SEO? Well, just go take a look at Google's E-E-A-T guidelines, and it will all make sense. Google is prioritizing brands more since the advancement of Large Language Models (LLMs) and Chat GPT as a way to combat AI-generated spam content ranking in search. We've seen for years that branded profiles like your social networks and any blogging profiles, when done correctly and presented as a web property the brand owns, actually improve the ranking of the main website. In the last couple of years, we incorporated using schema markup to connect the entity nodes with sameAs schema in order to better communicate to Google that the brand owns those other web properties external from their company website.

Recently, we compared two sites in the same niche, one with sameAs schema and one without. The conclusion: sameAs schema connecting branded properties to the main entity matters! Local business owners with a maps listing saw in their Google Business Profile late last summer that Google added the ability to show social icons. Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and social networks you can now add in your listing all grew their organic Google search traffic by 4x in the last year! This should speak loud and clear that your branded properties matter more now than they ever have when it pertains to SEO.
